The Bach Project with McKinley James, Benjamin Fryxell & Ariel Friedman

The Bach Project
A performance of three Bach Suites shared by three cellists, each movement is played by a fresh voice. The Bach Project brings the old traditions of music into new venues for classical music. Dividing up the movements continually contrasts tones, moods and style, so the familiar Suites come vibrantly alive.

The Cellists

Benjamin Fryxell
Though only 23 years of age, Ohio-born Benjamin Fryxell is already a seasoned veteran of the cello. He has given numerous performances over the years, and been a soloist with orchestras such as the Blue Ash-Montgomery Symphony Orchestra, the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, the Seven Hills Sinfonietta, the National Repertory Orchestra, and others. He was a student of Natasha Brofsky at Juilliard and is now getting his masters degree from New England Conservatory with Yeesun Kim.

Ariel Friedman
is a multi-genre cellist, composer and educator. A winner of ASTA’s Alternative Styles Award, she is steeped both in the music of American roots traditions and a broad range of classical repertoire. Ariel tours the U.S. and abroad with her sister as Ari & Mia, award-winning songwriters and highly acclaimed as New England’s Americana sister act, and has performed nationally and internationally with many other folk-based groups.

Ari is the founding cellist of Cardamom Quartet, a Boston-based ensemble engaged in reimagining the traditional canon by performing music exclusively by women. She received her degree from Northwestern University in 2008 and her Masters of Music from New England Conservatory in 2011.

McKinley James
is a classical and traditional cellist studying at New England Conservatory with Yeesun Kim.
A founding member of the band Night Tree, they have toured throughout the US, opened for Solas in Portsmouth Music Hall, and have played in Boston’s Jordan Hall and NYC’s Rockwood Music Hall. They released their debut album in 2017, their second will be recorded this spring, and they are touring in Europe this summer.  McKinley has played with the premier Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, touring Europe twice, playing in concert halls such as the Berlin Philharmonie and at the Alhambra in Spain and in New York’s Carnegie Hall. She has also played with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, Middlebury College Orchestra, and the New England Conservatory Symphony, and soloed with the Champlain Philharmonic Orchestra.
