2014 Northumberland Tour

The Northumberland Ranters–a group of 37 young traditional musicians that Young Tradition Vermont hosted in early April–has invited us to bring a group of young musicians/dancers there for a performance tour next year. The tour is scheduled to take place April 20-26, 2014 and will include the northernmost county in England, on the Scottish borders, with a foray across the border into Scotland. Visit here for a recent story in the Morpeth Herald in England about the group’s tour in April.

Famously named ‘The Land of Far Horizons’, Northumberland is filled with miles of gentle landscapes and unspoiled golden sandy beaches. The county is home to more castles than any other in England and also forms the final frontier of the Roman Empire along Hadrian’s Wall. We’ll do plenty of performing, but will also have time for discovering magnificent castles and the filming location of movies such as Harry Potter and much more.

Would you or someone you know be interested in being part of this tour? We estimate the cost will be about $2,000 per person, inclusive of air fare, ground transportation, lodging, and meals. We’re working on some grants and fundraising projects to reduce the per person cost for performers, but none of that is confirmed. What we need to know right now is what the interest is before our self-imposed deadline of August ….. if not enough folks are interested, we’ll let the opportunity pass.

We don’t need a financial commitment (yet)…… a small deposit will be due at a later date. 15 to 20 participants-players, singers, dancers-will be selected to be part of the tour. Selection criteria will include previous performing experience, ability level for singing, dancing and/or playing an instrument (or multiple instruments), ability to do more than one thing (e.g. we aren’t looking for just fiddlers), willingness and ability to learn new material, compatibility with other performers and adults who will be on the tour, and experience performing and interacting with others away from home. Those selected would need to commit not only to being performers for the tour, but also learning material independently, and some rehearsals and fund raising activities between late fall 2013 and the tour in April 2014.

We will be expected to have enough material for a full evening performance, including solo, duo, small group and full ensemble formats, and will be performing at schools, churches and concert halls, and dances/ceilis organized by the Northumbrian Ranters and others. Participants will also attend workshops with master teachers from Northumberland and exchanges with young performers, including those who visited the US this past April.

Members of the performance group must be 12 or older, 18 or younger. A limited number of chaperons/adults will be welcome to join the tour. Space is limited and we need to know by August 1, 2013 what the interest is before proceeding.

If you are interested please let us know by giving us some info here. Specifics about tour costs and itinerary will be available later. Please pass it forward to others you think might be interested.
