Thanks to everyone for helping us with the Farewell Reunion on Friday at Grace Church in Sheldon. The room was full and the rain was wet, same story as last year….. terrific that we can put this thing on and have good friends, old and new, young and old show up, contribute and have a great time. Everyone came and played when they were scheduled, and we were done by about 10:15…. not bad considering the potential for things going in a different direction.
We’re honored to join with Grace Church, our annual partner for 13 years. Beth, Andy, Dianne and everyone else have been our enthusiastic, loyal and resourceful co-conspirators in keeping it going year in and year out. Thanks also to Foothills Bakery (Amy and Jason Bell) for the soup and bread, the publicity support and the the freezer space, Messenger Print & Design (Lynne Fletcher) for the posters, All Arts Council (Dick Harper) for the publicity support and People’s Trust Company (Sharlene Larrow) for the financial support.
The concert is the major single event we use to raise money for the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children in life-threatening/life-altering conditions….. the money we raise goes a long way toward being able to continue supporting families in the coming year.
Every performer is donated their time and talents to the cause…… no one got paid, including travel expenses. To help these generous and talented people, I always ask everyone to buy at least one recording from one of the performers as part of your donation to the cause. I personally guarantee that anything you buy will be something you’ll enjoy. Plus, I had a special guarantee for the concert….. if you don’t like something you buy from someone, give it back to me and I’ll make sure you get something I don’t like!
Thanks to Howard Wooden, and a host of contributing artists associated with the concert over the years, some who weren’t able to perform this year…… we have produced a limited edition Farewell Reunion CD, all proceeds benefiting the Tom Sustic Fund. Artists on the CD are good friends and repeated supporters of our efforts. We needed to ramp up our efforts to raise money for the Fund as needs were far exceeding capacity. Last year support expenses exceeded revenue by over $3,000. It was Howard’s idea to create a CD to help, and he has done a beautiful job of making it happen. If you haven’t done so already, you can order one from me $15. We have a few of the limited run of 100 left.
We had help from a great crew of volunteers ….. including Beth Crane for organizing most of the hundreds of details, and she and her son for taking donations and handing out programs, everyone who put up posters, posted on Facebook and Front Porch Forum, and encouraged folks to come, Rev. Janet Brown, Jean Townsend, and Maribeth Nichols who hauled in and returned the tables and chairs loaned from the United Methodist Church (special appreciation to John and Kathy Gorton), Jan Hilborn and Sally and Albert Severy for arranging the loan of the BBQ grills, Tim West and his friend for doing the BBQ (Connie Warden for the hand-off), Curtis Ploof for the tent, friends and neighbors for use of their gas grills, Elizabeth Malone and Joanne Montayne for video recording, Maggy Young for taking photos, Andy Crane for everything Beth didn’t do before and after Friday and Dianne Crane for helping put up the tent and all the other attention, including living a across the street, Bill McKone for selling performer CDs and donating the door prize (a signed copy of his book about Captain John Lonergan during the Civil War…… thanks to Deborah Travis for putting up with me being absorbed in this and other events almost 24/7, and those who stuck around and helped us clean up after we were all done with the concert…. in the rain, in the fog, in the dark.
Not ready to talk about next year, but you might want to set aside the Friday of Memorial Day weekend, just in case!
