Dynamic young fiddler Haley Richardson will be returning to the Burlington Violin Shop on June 28 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. for an evening of traditional Irish music with North Carolina guitarist Don Penzien.
Haley Richardson began making her mark in the Irish music world when she won the MidAtlantic All Ireland qualifier in the under-12 age category at only six years old. Over the past ten years, she has amassed a long list of accomplishments and performed at venues all over the United States, Ireland, and the United Kingdom. Haley, with her highly ornamented Sligo style perfected under the tutelage of fiddler Brian Conway, is the 2017 All Ireland U15 Fiddle slow air champion, 2015 Junior Fiddler of Dooney, and 2013 All Ireland U12 Champion in both fiddle and fiddle slow airs. In addition to multiple All Ireland medals, she is a nine-time MidAtlantic Fleadh Solo Fiddle Champion, winning every year since she was six.
Haley performs solo and collaborates with other musicians on various projects including Shared Madness and Mothers’ Pride. Haley has shared the stage with many of the most well-known names in Irish music including The Chieftains, Altan, Dervish, Mick Moloney, Pride of New York, Liz Carroll with Cherish the Ladies, John Whelan, and Paddy Keenan. She is a regular member of Green Fields of American and The John Whelan Band. She has been the band fiddler in the Studio2Stage Irish dance production, That’s Dancing, from 2014-2017. Haley was also featured in an article in Fiddler Magazine’s Fall 2015 issue.
Don Penzien has long been a top-flight performer of traditional Irish music, and is a masterful guitarist with the remarkable ability to compliment and elevate the performances of the musicians he accompanies. Don makes up one half of Irish guitar and vocal duo Beirt le Chéile with Megan Irby, and frequently tours nationally playing concerts and festivals with John Whelan, Jil Chambless,The Máirtín de Cógáin Project, Captain Mackey’s Goatskin & String Band, Legacy, and Gailfean (formerly known as The Pure Drop; featuring Brian Conway, John Whelan, & Máirtín de Cógáin). Don’s dexterous work on DADGAD guitar provides solid, driving rhythms to traditional tunes as well as perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. When called upon, he also adds whistle, bodhran and vocals to arrangements.
Though a Michigan native, Don recently moved to Winston Salem, NC to serve as a Professor of Anesthesiology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, after having spent the prior 27 years in Jackson, MS. Don is the founder of, and served as director for CelticFest Mississippi for 25 years.
