Young Tradition Vermont will host a showcase concert August 12 at the Old Round Church in Richmond that will feature several up-and-coming young artists on Vermont’s traditional music scene. The concert, which runs from 3:00-5:00 p.m., is part of the Round Church Concert Series. Admission is by donation, and all proceeds go to benefit the Old Round Church.
Performing will be Fiddleheads, Alexander Allison with Tristan Henderson, ONE Band, and Romy and Ben Munkres.
Fiddleheads is a group run by Young Tradition Vermont, consisting of young people (usually no younger than 5, no older than early 20’s) interested in learning and performing traditional tunes. Started in the early winter of 2003, the primary goal of Fiddleheads is the enjoyment of traditional music, and playing that music with others. The tunes highlight the Yankee, French, Irish, Scottish and other cultural heritages, mostly associated with northern Vermont, New England and New York, as well as influences from outside the state.
Alexander Allison, 16, has been playing fiddle and mandolin for six years. His repertoire includes Irish, Scottish, Cape Breton, Quebecois, Acadian, Cajun, and Old Time tunes. He has traveled and performed in Ireland, Scotland, Cape Breton, and Japan with Young Tradition Vermont. His first fiddle lessons were with Katie Trautz and Pete Sutherland. He has studied composition with Liz Carroll and improvisation with David Greely. YTV 2013 Contest winner Tristan Henderson played a variety of music genres before jumping into traditional music and is quickly becoming a sought after accompanist, session musician and performer. An adventurous and powerful rhythm player who can also hold his own on melody, singing or picking, he never ceases to inspire with his boundless energy and joyful performances.
ONE Band The ONE Band (Old North End Neighborhood Band) is an open teen ensemble that is led by Vermont musician Brian Perkins, and is dedicated to playing the traditional music of Burlington, especially the music of immigrant populations that have settled in the Old North End.
Romy and Ben Munkres have been part of the Young Tradition Vermont Touring Group for three years, participating in tours to Ireland, Cape Breton, Japan and Scotland, and attending Trad Camp in late July every summer. Their family (including parents Kristin and Andrew) enjoys playing music together and perform in a band called Honey in the Hive. The family also plays music for the monthly contra dance in Cornwall. Romy (15) and Ben (14) won first place overall in the Young Tradition Contest in 2018.
After the showcase concert, trad roots power trio Pete’s Posse (Pete Sutherland, Tristan Henderson and Oliver Scanlon) will perform an evening concert from 7:00-9:00 p.m., also part of the Round Church Concert Series.
