2020 Young Tradition Festival
Young Tradition Vermont is pleased to announce the schedule for its annual Young Tradition Festival, which showcases young performers of traditional music and dance. The week celebrates the talents of young musicians and dancers, the traditions that they perpetuate, and the connection they have with their teachers and mentors.
Events throughout the week seek to cultivate and feature young performers and intergenerational sharing, from an evening concert series featuring world-class, accomplished performers who inspire the next generation of traditional musicians, to a concert showcasing young folks playing with their mentors and teachers.
One festival highlight is a contest which welcomes acoustic playing, repertoire, and dance that is folk/traditional. Contestants compete for about $2,000 in prizes, and the audience helps choose the winners. Winners of past contests include many performers who have gone on to perform throughout the region and make their own mark on traditional music and dance. Previous winners include Mayfly, Duncan Yandell & Pale Fire, Windborne, Appalachia North, Maunder Trio, Tristan Henderson & Hazen Metro, Eric George, Les Frères Bélanger, Nora Rodes, Les Poules a Colin, Romy & Ben Munkres, & La Croisée D’Antan. The co-winners of the 2019 contest, Spintuition, are the host band for this year’s festival!
Sponsors for the festival currently include Burlington City Arts and Vermont Folklife Center.

Thanks so much for last night (5/6/17 Young Tradition Weekend Showcase Concert). I had a wonderful time. I do like the way you coupled this event with the rest of the YT weekend…… My two banjo players will never forget last night as long as they live… Thanks so much. — Sarah Hotchkiss, fiddle and banjo teacher
We know, now hundreds of thousands for Phish fans will know, and we hope that you know what an important role you play in nurturing and encouraging the understanding, appreciation, and performance of music among children. We deeply appreciate the opportunity to support your efforts, look forward to hearing more about your progress, and wish you success in every regard. — Ellis Goddard, the Mockingbird Foundation
Thanks for all your efforts to give the youth a chance to be recognized [. . .] My students had a great time and I just opened an email from one of the moms who ordered herself a UKE saying she was SO inspired and wanted to make music like the kids!! — Gretchen Koehler, fiddle teacher
Feeling proud of my harp students who played at the Young Tradition Vermont Student Teacher Showcase last night (5/6/17). I’m so impressed by the diversity and quality of traditional music and dance in this area. Thanks to YTV for bringing us all together and for the chance for young folk to share music with peers and community! — Dominique Dodge, harp teacher
