The V. Richelieu violin is built in the workshop of Vermont Violins. The Guarneri pattern used is known for its rich tone and comfortable size. European Tonewood is used to provide rich overtones and harmonics – the soloist version uses softer, split Swiss spruce for the top for the sweeter tone – Italian spruce is used for the soloist version from sources known for use of Tonewood. Luthiers in the shop master different parts of the process, from graduating the plates to the final set-up. These instruments are hand finished with oil varnish, accentuating the flame of the Bosnian maple backs. The instruments are played from coast to coast by both traditional and classical musicians. Their popularity with group leaders, alumni and members of the Touring Group makes it a particularly important and meaningful contribution by Vermont Violins, and as a way for them thank their community of support.
