Though Alex Cuba adopted his birthplace as his surname, he is more than capable of transcending his musical roots. His ease with Cuban tradition sets a lived-in foundation for adventurous excursions, dabbling in sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks, jazz and funk flavors, and powerful guitar riffs. He has won two Juno Awards for World Music Album of the Year and, in 2010, he won the Latin Grammy for Best New Artist. His 2015 album, Healer, earned him another Latin Grammy as well as a Grammy Award nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Cuba’s most recent work has grown even more searching, burrowing into the filin movement—that fused jazz and trova in the ’40s—and opening up his artistic circle to build a neo-folk Canción Latinamericana.
