Jackie O’Riley and Rebecca McGowan

9 February 2020
1:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Four Corners School

The Vermont School of Irish Traditional Music is excited to offer a very special afternoon event presented by two of the most admired sean-nós dancers in the country, Jackie O’Riley and Rebecca McGowan. We can’t say enough good about them!

Film 1:30-2:15
Dance workshop 2:30 – 4pm

Please pass this on to anyone interested in Irish music and dance, and be sure to register early as space is limited!

Schedule for the afternoon is as follows:

1:30- 2:15 Free film showing and discussion. (Film can be purchased on-site or online). Open to all, audience limit of 50.

The film being shown, From the Floor, presents traditional Irish dance, as a “visual album”, with video tracks that bring the viewer into the detailed space that dancers and musicians inhabit when they are making music for each other.

Using film to change the scale of what the viewer usually sees, From the Floor “depicts the holistic event of dance – not just the act, but the anticipation of it, the effect and influence of setting, and of course, the chemistry between dancers and musicians” (Sean Smith, Boston Irish Reporter).

The album features 6 tracks of traditional and original Irish dance choreography by Jackie O’Riley & Rebecca McGowan in collaboration with Chris Stevens on accordion/concertina, Nathan Gourley on fiddle, and filmed by Louise Bichan. The Irish Echo calls it “an audacious, groundbreaking, and brilliantly realized project”. Following the screening will be a Q&A.

2:30 – 4 pm Dance workshop. $20, advance registration required. Participant limit: 30.
Following the film screening, Jackie and Rebecca will offer a sean-nós dance workshop. Sean-nós Irish dance is improvised, rhythmic, and expressive step dancing, closely tied to traditional music. The footwork is low to the ground, and accessible to dancers of all ages and abilities.

Both beginner and intermediate levels will be offered. Please bring a pair of flat hard-soled shoes.

To register for the dance workshop, please contact us by e-mail as soon as possible as we expect that demand will be high. benedictandhilari@gmail.com When we get your e-mail, we’ll give you instructions on how to complete your registration.
