The Secret Sisters, 2018 Folk Grammy nominees, visit The Barre Opera House on Saturday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m., part of the 2018-19 TD Bank Celebration Series. The show is sponsored by Swenson Granite with media support from VPR and The Point.

Siblings Lydia and Laura Rogers from Muscle Shoals, AL have exploded onto the Americana scene, due largely to their sweet, sisterly harmonies and their vintage Nashville/Southern gothic hybrid sound, music that evokes the classic sibling harmony groups of a bygone era – the Stanley Brothers, the Andrews Sisters, the Louvins, and the Carter Family all figure into their sound. But it’s clear that their music also comes from a deep sense of self, informed by their time spent growing up in church and the musically rich region of northern Alabama.

Lydia and Laura got their start in an open audition in Nashville, getting noticed by influential country producers Dave Cobb and T-Bone Burnett. Soon enough they were recording their self-titled debut record, produced by Cobb and released to widespread acclaim in 2010. Their classic harmonies and vintage honky-tonk style struck a nerve and the duo was off and running, touring the country and the major festivals. Their sophomore record, Put Your Needle Down, was helmed by the great T-Bone Burnett and made it to number 18 on the Billboard Country charts, but changes at the label combined with a conflict with their management led to the sisters discouraged and questioning their longevity in the music industry.

Thankfully, superstar singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile became the sisters’ champion, encouraging them to continue writing and performing, as well as offering to produce their new recording. The result was the critically adored You Don’t Own Me Anymore, a righteous blast of gothic Southern folk featuring the sisters’ trademark harmonies yet with a greater emphasis on their rapidly maturing songwriting. The album, put out by New West Records, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Carlile commented, “[Laura and Lydia are] complete unicorns and I couldn’t stay away. I remember the first time I ever heard them sing and I literally could not believe that it was happening in real life. They were and continue to be two of the most stunning singers in the world.”

The critics share that praise. Says American Songwriter, “You Don’t Own Me Anymore is a strong, welcome return and a reminder of just how powerful and moving the merging of two stunning voices can be.” NPR lauds the sisters’ “enchanting harmonies…blending Southern gospel, bluegrass, barbershop and swing influences, all with a contemporary, poetic twist.”
