The Youth Commission Ensemble is one of the 30 programs managed by Young Tradition Vermont. Each year a current or previous member of the Young Tradition Touring Group is selected for the YTV commission for the year (July through the following June). The person selected is charged with creating a small ensemble (4-6 members) and a program of original compositions/arrangements with mentors/master artists of their choosing, which is presented at performances, festivals and other events. Romy Munkres is the commissioned artist selected for 2019/2020, and has created an ensemble that also includes her brother Ben Munkres and musician friends Abi Sandy, Hadley Stockwell and Fern O’Donnell. Romy has been a winner at the Young Tradition Vermont annual contest, is an artist leader for the Touring Group, and has performed with them and her family band throughout Vermont as well as with the Touring Group in Ireland, Cape Breton, Scotland, Japan, and metro New York/New Jersey. Here is a video from the 2019/2020 ensemble’s first rehearsal at the Burlington Violin Shop on 10/5/19: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ENhyuHHPwM.
The Two Tones (Alexander Allison and Sebastiaan West) are trad-fusion duo from Vermont. They met while in the Young Tradition Vermont Touring Group, and a rapidly blossoming friendship soon turned into a serious musical partnership. The band regularly plays contra dances throughout Vermont as well as concerts and private events. They won for 2 consecutive years at the Young Tradition Conterst, and have traveled to and performed in Japan, Scotland, Cape Breton and New York City as part of the Young Tradition Vermont Touring Group. They play a wide range of styles, from Irish to Cajun to jazz to rock, and are constantly pushing the boundaries of their musical vocabularies.
