The 2019/2020 Young Tradition Youth Commission was awarded to Romy Munkres. She assembled a group of young musicians (including Ben Munkres, Hadley Stockwell, Fern Tamagini-O’Donnell and Abigail Sandy) who focused on learning about the histories of different traditional musics and about the historical links between styles. Since they already knew a lot about styles of trad music common in Vermont – including Irish, Cape Breton, and Quebecois – they invited local artists to teach about some of the traditions they were less familiar with.
Pete Sutherland – Burlington-based multi- instrumentalist and singer – brought Oldtime music to the group. Alex Kehler – Quebecois fiddle, nyckelharpa and cittern player – taught them Swedish music. Jeremiah McLane – accordionist and pianist – showed them music from central France. Joanne Garten – fiddler and dancer – taught them about different Scottish traditions.
With new knowledge and new tunes – as well as a few of their own – they put together a program designed to show the interconnections between these forms of traditional music through their shared histories. They are working with Colin McCaffrey on recording a CD as their end of year project this summer. Questions or comments about the Commission at firstname.lastname@example.org.
